Unnatural Anchor Text Patterns: When a referring domain uses exact-match commercial keywords as anchor text with no contextual justification, that pattern signals a manufactured link. Audit your anchor text distribution and flag any domain where the anchor appears engineered rather than editorial.

Site-Wide or Footer Links: Links embedded in site-wide elements—footers, sidebars, or navigation menus—across hundreds of pages from a single domain are a well-documented red flag. These structures are associated with link networks and paid placement schemes.

Hosting and Registration Anomalies: Domains registered in bulk, hosted on shared IP ranges known for link farms, or showing thin content with no apparent legitimate audience represent structurally risky referring sources.

Assign a risk tier to each flagged domain: high, medium, or low. High-risk domains are those exhibiting multiple toxicity signals simultaneously. Medium-risk domains show one or two signals but may have contextual explanations. Low-risk domains are borderline cases that warrant monitoring but not immediate action.

Step Three: Attempt Link Removal Before Disavowal

Google's official guidance recommends attempting manual removal before submitting a disavowal file. While this step is often underemphasized, it carries practical importance: demonstrating a good-faith effort to clean up unnatural links can support your position if a manual review is already underway.

For high-risk domains, identify contact information through WHOIS records or on-site contact pages and submit a removal request. Document every outreach attempt—the date, the recipient address, and the response (or lack thereof). Maintain this log as part of your audit record.

In practice, many spammy or link-farm domains will not respond. That is expected. The documentation itself is the value. After two unreturned outreach attempts over a reasonable period, the domain is a legitimate disavowal candidate.

Step Four: Build and Submit Your Disavowal File

Google's Disavow Tool, accessible through Search Console, allows site owners to instruct Google to ignore specific links when assessing a site's ranking signals. The file format is straightforward: one directive per line, using either the full referring URL or a domain-level directive (recommended for broad coverage).

Disavow at the domain level—using the domain: prefix—for any referring site where multiple pages carry toxic links. URL-level disavowal is appropriate only when isolated pages on an otherwise legitimate domain are the source of the problem.

Exercise restraint. Over-disavowal is a real risk. Removing links from domains that carry genuine authority, even if they appear unusual at first glance, can strip equity from your profile. When in doubt, err on the side of monitoring rather than immediate disavowal. The tool is designed for links that are clearly harmful or manipulative, not for links that are simply low-quality or irrelevant.
